#1 Morning Show for WOMEN!

Mary in the Morning is the #1 morning radio show among women age 35-54. We just got our first book of ratings from Arbitron (think TV's Nielsen) and the show came out on top! This show has been a group project from the get-go, and I want to thank all of our guests, the listeners, the many contributors of ideas and suggestions. Most of all, I'd like to thank my co-host and producer, Lori Cole who brings it all together.

Well Mary:

You might want to review this e-mail I got the other day.

To: Subscribers to the Spring 2007 Traverse City-Petoskey, MI Radio Market Report

Arbitron has learned that three Spring 2007 Traverse City-Petoskey metro diaries were returned from a media-affiliated household. We have confirmed that these diaries, which were in-tab for the originally published report, should not be included in the in-tab sample.

A revised Spring 2007 Traverse City-Petoskey Radio Market Report (Arbitron eBook), based on an in-tab sample that excludes these diaries, will release on Monday, October 22, at 10:00 AM Eastern Time. Revised Maximi$er, Media Professional, and Tapscan estimates will be available for download by ADE/TapMedia subscribers on October 22 at 10:00 as well. A revised Summary Data Set will also release on October 22 to third-party processors and other original recipients.

Audience estimates for WSRT-FM may be substantially affected. In addition, estimates for other stations may be slightly affected as a result of the sample balancing and reprocessing procedures that accompany deletion of any diary from the sample.

Questions may be directed to your Arbitron representative.

Regards,

Arbitron

PWND.

Looks like NBI shouldn't have flipped 106.7 from The Peak after all.

STERN RULES! BABA BOOEY BABA BOOEY!

perhaps mary's reports of her greatness have been blown a little out of proportion. it is very very strange that brand new radio show would do so well and now it appears we know why.. shame

The person(s) responsible for this conflict of interest have been dismissed from the company. I hope you will all give WSRT and Mary in the Morning the benefit of a doubt that we are a great show and great radio station.

Lori,

Your program director was the one responsible for the damage. Ask his wife and son about the diaries.

I don't see where he was dismissed yet.

Nice lady. Nice show. Lousy management. Sucks to be associated with it.

who all knew this was going on at the station. did mary know?

will this blog be removed once the new, real numbers come out monday that don't included the mary stuffed ballot box?

On Friday, October 12, 2007, Arbitron alleged that one or more of our employees had filled out listener diaries in the Spring 2007 Audience Survey and will be releasing revised rating information for the Traverse City/Petoskey market on Monday, October 22, 2007. The revisions will primarily affect reported listening levels on 106.7 WSRT. It is important to note that this had no affect on the gains made by WKLT/WKLZ or The FOX FM. After performing our own due diligence, we concluded that the household of two of our employees had indeed filled out diaries which were subsequently used in the tabulation of the Spring ratings. On Thursday, October 18, 2007, I asked for and received both of their resignations effective immediately.

Whether one or both were involved, we cannot tolerate any cloud of suspicion over the integrity of our company, ownership or management. I offer my humble and sincere apologies to both our competitors and Arbitron for the actions of one or two of our employees and this unnecessary, as well as embarrassing turn of events. It is also our hope that our advertisers and agency partners will understand that Northern Broadcast, Inc. believes in a fair and unbiased ratings system and that we will be doing everything in our power to re-earn your trust.
Sincerely,
Charlie Ferguson

the "cloud of suspicion" horse has already left the barn. Question now is: who at the station knew what had happened but failed to say anything about it until Arbitron uncovered the dirty deed. There is no way a brand new radio show does that well in the a a first book- and there had to be many people at WSRT whose eyebrows were raised... there had to be knowledge beyond the guilty parties.

looks like the blog has been turned off

To quote Mr. Ferguson:

"We will be doing everything in our power to re-earn your trust."

How about killing this abortion known as WSRT and giving northern Michigan a better radio station? Not everybody likes vanilla pop (KHQ), classic rock (KLT and The Bear), emo crap (The Zone) or *ugh* COUNTRY! NBI had a GREAT station with The Peak and they killed a great station over greed. Now, WSRT will be everybody's bitch in the ratings and NBI will have 40 lbs. of egg on their faces.

Oh, I've listened to Mary in the Morning. I changed the station after 10 seconds. It would make just as much sense for NBI to put a microphone inside a hen house since it's practically the same thing.

well.. wsrt cheated... many people had to know about it.. and mary boasted on her website.... bad all the way around for wsrt who is now the butt of many jokes and so are the people who rave about mary

Anonymous said...

how silly is it that mary thinks that a rookie to radio could come in and do huge numbers... clearly she had to be in on it

Anonymous said...

There is absolutely no way Mary was involved in this. She is a woman of integrity and would never approve or participate in such a scam.

Anonymous said...

and how are we supposed to know this? no way only 2 or 3 people knew this was going on.... goodness knows what else is going to be uncovered that is going on at that station

Anonymous said...

I know it based on how Mary has conducted herself professionally both at the chamber and in her own business.

Anonymous said...

all may be true.. but we arent talking about the chamber or her business. we are talking about a major radio violation that directly speaks to integrity and truthfulness... a station that small and "nobody" knew about it? wink wink

I'm a Broadcaster for another group. I don't think Mary was involved. This was a decision by someone in authority at WSRT trying to make the station ratings jump for it's benefit. Mary has a business that I'm sure she's too busy with to play radio games.

I have had the chance to know Mary for over 7 years, not from the Chamber nor her consulting business.

I honestly think that she takes her time on the air seriously, but I really do not think that her success on air is so important as to jeopardize the creditability she has in Traverse City. At the end of the day, that is all a consultant has to offer.

Todd Martin, the now former PD at WSRT continues to market himself as ambitious. Given the slow start the station has seen since the format flip, I might suggest that it was this ambition that a caused difficultly for the station.

In addition, I have worked with Charlie Ferguson from his days in Minot and have found him to be an agressive, and often demanding operator, but honest and above ratings tampering.

There will be more fall out to come (this situation just hit the trades today), but 3 diaries out of 166 completed diaries are not enough to diminish the success of WSRT completely and I will be interested in the new book's offerings.

Best of luck with the show.

There's an awful lot of "Mary bashing" going on here. It seems to me that people have just been waiting for a opportunity to dump on her and voila! here's the perfect chance to spit out all of their mean-spirited crap. You either like Mary's show or you don't. Don't put unwarranted blame on her just because you're not a fan. Be a grown-up--say what you want about the show, but stay away from personal attacks that aren't based on a shred of evidence.

Mary:

The book was cooked by your former PD, his wife and their son.

You are not number one as a result yet you keep this page up as bragging rights.

Doesn't character as one that wants to empower women to be their best enter into this at all or is it acceptable to misrepresent the facts?

I find it very hard that no one at the station other than Martin and his wife knew about it and then for her to publish that lame and sad letter is too unreal. Todd's career is over. Period. Her station is losing national and regional orders as of today and national is not far behind. This will cost many of you your jobs in the long run.

Was it worth it?

And another thing:

Mary has a business that I'm sure she's too busy with to play radio games.

If you are too busy to play Radio Games, then why are you on the air? The battle for #1 IS the game. If radio is secondary then you are a user of the medium not part of the creation of the medium's magic.

marketing yourself as the host of a number one radio show IS a huge part of her business.. so she has a huge stake in the ratings.. HUGE stake.

I do not listen to Mary's show in the morning, but that's because I just don't care for that type of music. But I won't sit here and say "Mary must have known about this" because it's not fair to her. Nobody knows the whole truth about it, except for the ones involved, so leave it at that. Don't put the blame on Mary just because she works there. It really isn't fair to her.

Anonymous said...

she more than works there. and she put this we are number 1 blog up.. and she is a big girl.... so deal with it

Hey, Anonymous,
Got anything better to do? Friends to visit? Books to read? Other people to pick-on? The blog was published months ago under a title that, at the time and to the best of anyone's knowledge, was correct. Obviously, there have been a few changes and a few, warranted, resignations. You, alone, have belabored that point to death. Besides, if Mary deleted this blog, what would you do with your seemingly endless spare time? In the end, based on the new numbers, (yes, they're out, a fact few people seem to be interested in, now,) Mary in the Morning is a successful show. Even if the numbers didn't back it up, the simple fact that her events continue to sell out, and national companies continue to ask her, specifically, to advertise their products, says far more than rating books ever could.
As the kids say..... "move-on-dot-org, dude."

This will be the final entry in the stream of comments. This blog’s intended purpose is for business women to discuss issues they find relevant to their lives. There are other places for radio industry discussion where I enthusiastically encourage broadcast professionals to comment on the Mary in the Morning show to whatever extent the choose.
